Peter Stein

“Faust-Fantasy” is a monologue, in which the great director Peter Stein made his first-ever appearance as a stage actor.

Stein created one of his most famous productions in 2000 as part of the International EXPO in Hannover — a 20-hour production of Goethe's “Faust” featuring 35 actors. Later this production was performed in Vienna and Berlin. “Faust-Fantasy” is a brief echo of this work, for which composer Artura Annecchino wrote the original music.

“This is a concerto for voice and piano. At first Giovanni Vitaletti plays a few musical themes from 'Faust' and then I pronounce a monologue of Faust. After that the musical themes change and I pronounce a monologue of Mephistopheles. Then things get more complicated — a series of dialogues is followed by Walpurgisnacht, the love between Faust and Margarete, and a sorrowful finale. Indeed, this is a fantasy on the themes of Part One of 'Faust,' the same themes that have been inspiring the imagination of artists for several centuries now.” - Peter Stein
