The script for My Brother Is Dead was completed by Alexei Balabanov three days before his death. It is a story about a blind boy who sees through the eyes of his dead brother, and his epiphany is preceded by a chain of events in the spirit of novels by Fyodor Dostoevsky and Nikolai Leskov. The team of directors chose the genre of a performative reading in order to hear and feel Balabanov's language on stage. Nikolai Komyagin is the composer of the project; he created several musical pieces especially for the production.
"Through the last text of Alexei Balabanov we are trying to follow or at least feel the path of the last hero of Russian cinema. We are aiming to learn, to understand, perhaps to guess his features, which can be discerned in the present day only if you know the source material," says director Maxim Sokolov.
My Brother Is Dead is the first event in the large program Layer, dedicated to the study of cinematic texts in the New Space of the Theatre of Nations.
