Doors Closed Day

Doors Closed Day is a documentary production about teenagers who learned the theory of "crime and punishment" not from a school curriculum, but through their own experience. The protagonists of the play are five girls from Tomsk Correctional Colony No. 2 and four boys from Arkhangelsk Correctional Colony. Each has a unique crime, as does their background, but the same sentence—imprisonment—is meted out to all. It was this experience that became the director's research subject and the reason for the expedition behind the barbed wire.

"I'm very interested in the topic of freedom. So, I wanted to talk about it with teenagers, who, due to their age, value it extremely highly and literally demand it. And I decided to do this in places where they are most deprived of freedom," says Dmitry Krestyankin. "I believe this should lead to an honest conversation about freedom, responsibility, mistakes, repentance, love, and hope."

Dmitry Krestyankin's socio-artistic experiment, based on interviews with prisoners in Russian correctional colonies, also raises ethical questions regarding theatrical art: how does restriction of freedom influence the perception of a work of art and, conversely, how effective can art be for inmates?
