The director Timofey Kulyabon has left the text of Euripides’ tragedy fully unchanged, but he had the action transferred to a contemporary hi-tech airport lounge. Here, along with arrivals and departures, the theories of world’s creation, developed by scientists of the 20th century, are being broadcast on screens. The question arises – if it wasn’t God who created the world, then what the Ancient mythological heroes were driven by?
Without radical concepts and effects, Kulyabin manages to transform the tragedy about Gods’ ancestors into a psychological drama, where each event is not doomed, but rather defined by heroes’ personal desires and needs. Therefore Kulyabin tackles the issues that have concerned European theatre for a long time – the nature of a myth and a victim in the world where a line between a crime and sacrifice becomes barely noticeable.
