Filip Grigoryan’s performance does not resemble any other production of the Gogol’s iconic comedy about a frustrated marriage. The outside life gave the director a handle for creating an eccentric, even surreal stage world where familiar things are blended with inexplicable. In accord with the author’s idea, the director easily combines current rhythms and images, confronting different human types and social masks. A new version of Marriage reminds how cruel consumer society can be to an individual, and how hard it is nowadays for a human to remain their true self and to be happy in a world of easy temptations and substitutes.
